Hannah and Elyn took another dip in the hell pool before we all laughed over the glitter on their skin, and then crashed for the night. I tossed and turned near Hannah and Elyn in my usual corner of the room for twenty minutes or so before sitting up and shoving a hand through my hair, trying to push the mass of it out of my eyes.

It fell right back down, of course. That stuff would be the death of me.

My eyes collided with Auden’s.

He sat up against the opposite wall, his expression intense as he watched me.

Still annoyed with him, I flipped him the bird before rising to my feet.

Now that the hot springs were no-longer hellish for me, maybe I could take advantage of my connection to the water and use it to get a good night’s sleep.

I peeled my shirt over my head and sat down on the edge of the pool, sliding my legs in first. I had some really terrible memories of that pool. Thinking about it, I realized that we could’ve had our lure-lesson anywhere. Including in the waterfall room.

The only reason Auden could’ve possibly wanted to do it in the other room?

Because he knew about those crappy memories.

Or because he felt the same way about those awful moments of my life as I did.

A soft sigh slipped from my lips.

I heard quiet footsteps on the stone, before he lowered to a seated position beside me.

Neither of us said anything for a few long minutes.

We were the only two awake, at least, as far as I knew. Auden, Rollen, and Kilo would be taking turns on watch, since the three of them didn’t trust the other wind fae as much as they trusted each other, and because us women had no idea how to fight if some kind of threat happened to pop up while everyone was sleeping. I could use my dust, but all it would do was intoxicate them for a few minutes.

Auden was up first, and I was fairly confident he’d be up at least until he knew for sure that I was asleep, because he always was.

I moved my legs slowly through the water. It took five or six minutes before its peaceful effect began to set in, but when it did, my shoulders eased and I breathed a little easier.

Yeah, I would definitely sleep better in the hot spring. Even if it was a place filled with crappy memories of even crappier pain.

When Auden finally broke the silence, he did it through our mental connection rather than speaking aloud. “I’m sorry.”

I didn’t answer right away.

On one hand, I probably owed him an apology too. I’d lost my temper and gotten angry just like he had. On the other hand, the way that he’d judged me still hurt.

“I don’t have an excuse, but I’m sorry,” he repeated, his gaze focused on the waterfall off in front of us. It wasn’t a big waterfall, but the ripples it made rode the water almost all the way to us.
